Testing the mapping between redshift and cosmic scale factor

چکیده

The canonical redshift−scale factor relation, 1/a = 1 + z, is a key element in the standard ΛCDM model of the big bang cosmology. Despite its fundamental role, this relation has not yet undergone any observational tests since Lemaı̂tre and Hubble established the expansion of the Universe. It is strictly based on the assumption of the Friedmann–Lemaı̂tre–Robertson–Walker metric describing a locally homogeneous and isotropic universe and that photons move on null geodesics of the metric. Thus any violation of this assumption, within general relativity or modified gravity, can yield a different mapping between the model redshift z = 1/a − 1 and the actually observed redshift zobs, i.e. zobs 6= z. Here we perform a simple test of consistency for the standard redshift−scale factor relation by determining simultaneous observational constraints on the concordance ΛCDM cosmological parameters and a generalized redshift mapping z = f(zobs). Using current baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) and Type Ia supernova (SN) data we demonstrate that the generalized redshift mapping is strongly degenerated with dark energy. Marginalization over a class of monotonic functions f(zobs) changes substantially degeneracy between matter and dark energy density: the density parameters become anticorrelated with nearly vertical axis of degeneracy. Furthermore, we show that current SN and BAO data, analysed in a framework with the generalized redshift mapping, do not constrain dark energy unless the BAO data include the measurements from the Lyα forest of high-redshift quasars.

Intensity mapping of molecular gas during cosmic reionization

I present a simple calculation of the expected mean CO brightness temperature from the large scale distribution of galaxies during cosmic reionization. The calculation is based on the cosmic star formation rate density required to reionize, and keep ionized, the intergalactic medium, and uses standard relationships between star formation rate, IR luminosity, and CO luminosity derived for star f...

baryonic matter distribution in the large-scale structures is one of the main questions in cosmology. This distribution can provide valuable information regarding  the processes of galaxy formation and evolution. On the other hand, the missing baryon problem is still under debate. One of the most important cosmological structures for studying the rate and  the distribution of the baryons is gal...

Mapping the Cosmic Web with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

Wide-angle, moderately deep redshift surveys such as that conducted as part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) allow study of the relationship between the structural elements of the large-scale distribution of galaxies – including groups, cluster, superclusters, and voids – and the dependence of galaxy formation and evolution on these enviroments. We present a progress report on mapping eff...

Determining neutrino properties with the SKA

Current measurements of cosmic large-scale structure (LSS) are able to place an ∼ 1 eV upper limit on the absolute mass scale of neutrinos. A factor ∼ 20 improvement in mass sensitivity, together with an insensitivity to systematic effects, is needed to reach the lowest value allowed by particle physics experiments. We consider here the prospects of determining the neutrino mass scale, the numb...

The covariance of cosmic shear correlation functions and cosmological parameter estimates using redshift information

Cosmological weak lensing by the large scale structure of the Universe, cosmic shear, is coming of age as a powerful probe of the parameters describing the cosmological model and matter power spectrum. It complements Cosmic Microwave Background studies, by breaking degeneracies and providing a cross-check. Furthermore, upcoming cosmic shear surveys with photometric redshift information will ena...
